Spring of 1866 - This morning Red Cloud headed off to Fort Laramie where he was expected to convene the U.S. government in a great peace conference. Not only was Red Cloud the only one there, but other chiefs from the Sioux and Cheyenne. Set up by the man named William T. Sherman, he required it so that white immigrants may perhaps march on Indian territory and establish three forts along the Bozeman trail, Fort Reno, Fort Phil Kearny, and Fort C.F. Smith. Red Cloud denied this offer because of since they had already been doing this anyhow. After Red Cloud and the others stormed off, The government decided that no one would end them from keeping the trail opened.

Our horses are dying of thirst, our crops are dying from no water, and our people are dying from dehydration. The dreadful thing is that we have not saw a single buffalo as well, in days.
