Transformation involves taking the themes and ideology of an original text and finding parallels in the new context for which it is transformed. The transformation of Jane AustenÂ’s novel Emma to Amy HeckerlingÂ’s film Clueless illustrates significant changes in terms of social hierarchy and social expectations while preserving attitudes towards gender roles and the artificiality of society while reflecting different contexts. AustenÂ’s original text asserts the traditional, English regent attitudes towards class transcendence; however, its subsequent transformation in Clueless promotes egalitarianism and social fluidity. Similarly, the conservative social expectations concerning marriage and etiquette of early 19th century England have been obliterated by the carefree, unfastened morality of late 20th century California. However, both texts emphasize the artificiality of their societies and conservative, patriarchal attitudes towards women.
