De-Historicising Wuthering Heights: How does the 1939 Film Adaptation of Wuthering Heights De-historicise and Conventionalise Brontes Novel Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Emily Bronte’s classic and highly regarded novel Wuthering Heights published in 1847 tells the timeless story of doomed lovers Cathy and Heathcliff and the repercussions of their obsession, set within the strict social codes of the 1770’s. The novel although not received well at the time by it’s Victorian readers with it’s dark themes and characters being considered quite controversial, is now considered one of the finest pieces of gothic literature. William Wyler’s 1939 adaptation of the novel received critical acclaim with seven Oscar nominations, winning best cinematography and losing out to Gone With the Wind (1939) which won six of those categories. Bronte’s novel contains important social and economic themes relevant to both the novel’s historical setting in the 1770s and its inception during the 1840’s. Two of the main themes that have been discussed in regards to Wuthering Heights are that of social inequality and of race and ethnicity.
