Emily Brontes classic and highly regarded novel Wuthering Heights published in 1847 tells the timeless story of doomed lovers Cathy and Heathcliff and the repercussions of their obsession, set within the strict social codes of the 1770s. The novel although not received well at the time by its Victorian readers with its dark themes and characters being considered quite controversial, is now considered one of the finest pieces of gothic literature. William Wylers 1939 adaptation of the novel received critical acclaim with seven Oscar nominations, winning best cinematography and losing out to Gone With the Wind (1939) which won six of those categories.
Brontes novel contains important social and economic themes relevant to both the novels historical setting in the 1770s and its inception during the 1840s. Two of the main themes that have been discussed in regards to Wuthering Heights are that of social inequality and of race and ethnicity.
