SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICS Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Special Weapons and Tactics, also known as S.W.A.T., was a unit that originated in the late 1960s in the city of Delano, California in response to the farm worker uprising led by Cesar Chavez. It was also instituted in respond to the infamous Watts Riot. This unit was a department wide team comprised of specialized crowd control, sniper, and counter force training throughout the United States. During the 1960s, Los Angeles was experiencing problems with sniping incidents against police officers and civilians. Since the ordinary police had limited weapons training and combat training they could not take on this problem by themselves. A tactical team had to be created to help with this problem and solve it immediately. Officer John Nelson came up with the idea to form a specially trained and equipped unit intended to respond to critical situations while lowering police casualties. This idea was reviewed and approved by Inspector Darryl F. Gates. This unit was formally known as the SWAT team.
