How and why did American troops retreat from the Vietnam War?
To answer this question, it should be broken down into the hows and the whys.
Let us first look at why. Richard Nixon had several motives for ending the US involvement in Vietnam. One of them was quite obvious. Many US troops were dying or taken as POVs. He did not want to endanger these troops more than necessarily. Therefore it would be an obvious decision to retreat the troops in Vietnam.
Another reason for retreat from the Vietnam War was that Nixon could see that no matter what, eventually the Vietnamese communists would win. Although the US could win the war, the communists would still be a predominant part of the Vietnamese population. As Nixons faith in the South Vietnamese government was getting weaker, and therefore it would just be a matter of time before a communist government would take over, either in an election or through a revolution.
