The field of knowledge managment has drawn insights, ideas, theories, metaphors and approaches from diverse disciplines. This section briefly reviews the history of knowledge management. The tracing of the roots helps to understand the perspective which knowledge management has or can have on organizations.
The roots of the term knowledge management can be traced back to the late 60s and early 70s in the Anglo-American literature. However, it almost took another 20 years until the term appeared again in the mid 80s in the context as it is still used today. This time it got a tremendous amount of attention.
