Erik Erikson, born in Frankfurt- Germany on June 15, 1902 was a follower of Sigmund Freud, who believed that an individual must have three structures of mind to develop successfully. The id (fully conscious mind), ego (mostly conscious mind) and super ego (partly conscious mind) were the three necessities. Although he was a follower of Freud, he believed that ego does not only meditate between id impulses and superego demands, but also is a positive force in development (Berk, 2004, p.16). Eriksons psychosocial theory was broken down into eight stages of development. In this essay, the importance of autonomy vs. shame and doubt and initiative vs. guilt which are the second and third psychological stages of development will be discussed.
Eriksons theory was first introduced at the White House Conference in 1950. It includes eight stages that span infancy through adulthood.
