On March 1, 1989, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, a group of high school "Jocks" raped a seventeen-year-old retarded girl. The idealistic town could never believe that "their boys" could ever have committed such a heinous crime. The boys were raised in a community where sports ruled and enforced the stereotypes that the boys would later go on to portray to the fullest. The media, their community, and the sports culture had created young men who had such a warped view of the world they believed nothing was out of bounds.
These young men had no views on women as equals because women were regarded as mothers and wives; their jobs were to make the men of the town happy. They were treated as objects and rarely held positions of authority-there were not any women mentors, therefore everyone looked up to their fathers and saw that men were the supreme beings. By middle school most of the members of the sports clique and its admirers lived in a hermetic all-male world of teams and friends and brothers and fathers.
