Major theme in Death of a Salesman Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“Death of a Salesman” has many themes, however the most significant one is the reality versus delusions, more precisely the Loman family’s inability to distinct between reality and delusions. Willy is the main character who suffers from this ailment which has infected Biff and Happy as well. Willy’s mind is full of delusions about his own abilities and accomplishments and that of his sons specially Biff. When explaining why they can't leave the crowded city to live in New York, Willy tells Linda; "I'm the New England man. I'm vital in New England." Unfortunately for Willy, this is just an illusion and in reality he's a disrespected salesman. Although Biff has done nothing constructive with his life until the age of thirty-four, Willy tells others and tries to make himself believe that his son is doing “big things" out west. Willy’s frequent flashbacks are completely or partly fabricated which demonstrate that he is having difficulty distinguishing between reality and delusions or his wishful thinking.
