Harlem Renaissance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

A century ago the African American world was shaken by a movement that redefined black artistic works, and opened the door for future Black writers, musicians, artists and actors. The New Negro Movement, later known as the Harlem Renaissance, redefined the Black artist and exposed the American Majority to the thoughts and the lives of African Americans. Before this 1920s acclaimed black authors were few and far between. It was not until this outburst of creativity and experimentation that the White World began to read what we had to say, view our lives the way we desired to write them, and recognize our culture. Many African American artists set the stage for this movement by opening the doors into the creative world. Paul Lawrence Dubnar and Charles W. Chestnut were among the first African Americans in the late 1800s to receive national acclaim for their work of literature. The literature of James Weldon Johnson and Claude Mckay’s poetry anticipated the coming literature of the 1920s.
