Mental Imagery as a Relaxation Technique Even though we may not notice it, we use mental imagery every day, many times a day. Whether we are at home with the dog, kids or at work, we use mental imagery. Day dreaming is the most common form of mental imagery, and our brain uses it, as a way to “download” sensory information for “reprocessing” as a computer would when it is in standby mode. Many people are aware of when they daydream, but often can not recall what it was they where thinking about. Day dreaming and many others are ways to relax and release stress too. Relaxation is important not only to your body, but also to your mind. The mind might be the most important thing in our bodies to relax. Having a relaxed mind allows us to become more involved with our bodies and inner self. It allows us to hear our self talk and whether it is positive or negative. It also lets us take time to make self affirmations so that we can counteract the negative emotions and thoughts.
