Winston Churchill heralded Robert E. Lee as “one of the noblest Americans who ever lived”. The Confederacy’s most celebrated general inspired an out-manned, out-gunned army to achieve greatness on the battlefield. Robert Edward Lee is considered to be one of America’s greatest military commanders. He was a brilliant strategist and had a keen sense for the contours of a battlefield. Lee’s genius during the Civil War impacted history in many ways. Lee was born on January 19, 1807 to former General Henry “Light Horse” Lee and Ann Hill Carter, in Stratford Hall near Montross, Virginia. His parents raised Robert with strong beliefs and values his father enforced consistently from an early age. Robert had a tremendous love for his state, country, and the rural lifestyle. As a young boy, he enjoyed hunting and playing with his friends. Lee learned to read at an early age and remained an enthusiastic reader his entire life.
