In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad talks about the darkness within each man. Conrad demonstrates that each man has a savage in him and its just the society (laws) that keeps that savage in each man and doesnt allow it to come out. But the society can hold in only so much, and other forces may bring out the savage in men. Clearly from his story, the source of the darkness (savage) within is its lust of power. The first character, the manager, was a victim of the darkness. The manager was a two faced individual who acted in opposition to his own true feelings. When Kurtz had power, the manager was very loyal to him. Obviously he was loyal to him for only one reason, and that is so he became close to Kurtz and would have some power/control. As sharp as Kurtz was, he came onto the manager and knew he was a backstabber. This noxious fool (meaning the manager) is capable of prying into my boxes when I am not looking.
