Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular love stories of all time. It has been turned into film by Baz Luhrman and Franco Zephrelli. It is so poetic that is has been adapted into ballet by Tchaikovsky and Prokofier and song by Lou Reed and Dire Straits. There are many conflicts and contrasts within the play. Obvious conflict and contrasts are between the two ‘house holds’, Montague and Capulet, Juliet and her mother and Tybalt and Benvolio. Also there is verbal and emotional conflict. An example of this is Romeo’s emotion, ‘sick health’ and ‘bright smoke’. More conflicts are verbal and emotional. Examples of these are Sampson and Gregory when they are punning around with words. There also is literal conflict between Tybalt and Mercutio. The conflict escalates by prerogative language and ends up with them both fighting.
Firstly there is conflict and contrast between Sampson and Gregory. They are having a ‘battleÂ’ with words. Firstly they engage light hearted banter but it becomes less palatable when they start to pun around the subject of rape. An example of this is Â......
