In 1877 Russia declared war on Turkey. Russia forced Turkey to cede a considerable amount of Turkish land during the Russo-Turkish war. Surrounding countries showed concern that Russia was gaining more ground, and started to intervene with this somewhat small war, creating what could have been a world war. Startled by this, German Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck called an international conference to consider a peace treaty. World War I would have actually happened in 1877 if not for the peace loving efforts of German Prime Minister, Otto von Bismarck. Otto von Bismarck, born Otto Eduard Leopold of Bismarck-Schönhausen, born on April 1, 1815 and died on July 30, 1898. Bismarck was born in Schönhausen, the family estate in the Old Prussian province of Brandenburg, situated west of Berlin. His father, Ferdinand von Bismarck, was a landowner and a former Prussian military officer; his mother, Wilhelmine Mencken, belonged to a Lower Suxanburgher family.
