The republic - Plato Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Republic Plato was born in 427 B.C. He came from a family that played a prominent part in Athenian politics. However, Plato did not join politics, as he was disgusted by the violence and corruption that came with it. Plato’s work contains aspects such as mathematics, history, morality and religion. He wrote over twenty philosophical dialogues and thirteen letters. His famous book, The Republic was divided into dialogues, book by book. The reason for writing philosophy in conversational format is that it allowed Plato to depict Socrates in action. Also, Socratic philosophy can only be realized through question and answer. The dialogue format of The Republic allows for this philosophical realization and understanding. In The Republic Plato attempts to define justice, and to define it in such a way as to show that justice is worthwhile. Plato’s strategy in The Republic is to first explain the primary notion of societal, or political justice, and then to illustrate the concept of individual justice in an analogy.
