Dorothea Dix Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Dorothea Dix was born on April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine to Joseph Dix and Mary Bigelow Dix. She was the first of three kids. She had two younger brothers. Her family life was abusive and nonexistent most of the time. Her mother was mentally ill, and her father was an abusive alcoholic. Throughout her childhood, she raised her brothers, because her parents part in their unstable household. Her father’s behavior influenced her to make choices in her own life, and not to grow up and be like him. When she was 12 years old, she and her brothers moved in with her 70-year-old grandmother, Madame Dix, into the Dix Mansion. Because she was not used to this rich and wealthy lifestyle, she had much to learn. She was often punished for not behaving like a lady, and giving food away. Her grandmother treated her like she was royalty even though she often rejected it. She lived with her Great Aunt for four years to work on her etiquette. During this time at her Aunt's house Dorothea attended several parties for her rich relatives and met her second cousin, Edward Bangs. Edward was fourteen years......
