Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is about a man who seeks his soul to separate good impulses from the bad; to purify the human nature overall. The most central and probing question is about the conception of humanity as dual in nature and whether humans really do consist of pure and evil sides. Throughout the book, Stevenson uses not just the plot, but also the structure and the style to answer the question. Jekyll believes that the soul of a man is not one, but truly two. He imagines that the soul holds not only the evil, but also the good as well. Soul, Jekyll says, is where each side fights for its dominance. His potion, which he hoped would separate the two counterparts, fails and brings out the dark side in human form. Once the evil form, known as Mr. Hyde, takes dominance, the nice, gentle Dr. Jekyll ceases to exist. Transforming into Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll wrote, "when I looked upon that ugly idol, I was conscious of no repugnance, rather a leap of welcome. This too was myself. It seemed natural and human" (71).
