Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher was born in London, England on February 17, 1890. He was a British statistician and geneticist who pioneered the application of statistical procedures to the design of scientific experiments. The contributions Ronald Fisher made included the development of methods suitable for small samples, the discovery of the precise distributions of many sample statistics and the invention of analysis of variance. He introduced the term maximum likelihood and studied hypothesis testing. It was FisherÂ’s interest in the theory of errors in astronomical observations that eventually led him to investigate statistical problems.
In 1909, Fisher was awarded a scholarship to study mathematics at the University of Cambridge, from which he graduated in 1912 with a B.A. in astronomy. He remained at Cambridge for another year to continue course work in astronomy and physics and study the theory of errors.
