China was the perfect place, All under heaven (1.Burke, S.O.A, p 38), as they put it. They were not greedy and did not steel from, or put pressure on other countries, they simply wanted to be left alone. But in the 16th century, during the Qing dynasty, the Europeans had discovered China. The Europeans saw how diverse China was and demand for their products, tea, silk and porcelain, began to start in Europe. China did not want to trade with Europe as they thought it was pointless, so they limited all trade to the port of Guangzhou. High demand for Chinas products grew in Britain so the British started to pay in silver and went into trade deficit. To equal the scores, the British introduced opium to China and illegally began selling it to locals. Eventually on August 23, 1839, the British declared war on China, seized control of Hong Kong and seized an outpost along the coast of China. The Opium Wars went on from 1839 to 1842 and from 1856 to 1860. The opium wars affected China in many ways, some were short term and some were long term.
