Woman athletes in media Extensive research shows that, even at its best, media coverage of women athletes tends to be ambivalent. It juxtaposes positive descriptions and images with descriptions that undermine women's efforts and success within sports. My analysis of the media and how it portrays women in sports, Ive watched several hours of television such as ESPN, Comcast Sports Net, news and read magazine articles to really identify how the media portrays women athletes. It takes a strong woman! Even today, women not only have to excel in their sport, they have to be better than the men to gain a fraction of the recognition and praise showered upon our male sports figures. In order to combat the stereotype that women in sports have lost their femininity, women often allow themselves to be portrayed in overly feminine ways. Instead of being celebrated for their excellence in their sport, their toned bodies are flaunted. Women in sports are, more often than not, depicted in sexualized poses because it objectifies them, such as when Sport Illustrated covered the USA women volley......
