Civil & Criminal Law Civil and criminal law are just two types of law within the English Legal System and differ from each other entirely. In this essay I shall be discussing the differences between criminal and civil law and how their differences result in different outcomes and remedies. Criminal law branches off of Public Law which suggests that it is for the benefit of the community and because this law is against the state and punished by the state. Therefore criminal law governs the relationship between the state and the individual; dealing with offences such as murder, theft and motoring offences. Those are to only name a few. Crime is very diverse and an offence against a person can range from a shove to murder. First, it is an offence against the public, although it might affect only one person. Secondly, that the person who committed an offence will be punished in some manner prescribed by the State.
