Conglomerate of Characters: usage in Beowulf Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In literature, characters provide multiple uses for the author: in addition to being merely one of the people involved in a story, a character can be a symbol for a concept or idea, representative of a certain group, or personify an influential figure from history. Major characters have multiple facets and can be classified as a protagonist, antagonist, guardian, or contagonist. Minor characters can also be classified into Jungian archetypes of Reason, Emotion, Sidekick, and Skeptic. The epic poem Beowulf, despite originating in the eighth century, employs character to the highest degree, partitioning off various minor characters to serve individual purposes. In the epic poem Beowulf, minor characters greatly impact the story through the roles they play. The character of the Grendel is particularly representative of the culture and beliefs of the Anglo-Saxon time period. In a time where both pagan and Christian beliefs mixed and mingled, the Grendel personifies evil and a fallen man in both beliefs.
