To Kill A Mockingbird and prejudice Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To Kill a Mockingbird, is a novel written in 1960 by Harper Lee. This was based on the time period between the years 1933 to 1935 in the Deep South of the United States. The novel is portrayed in the southern state of Alabama (being the location of Maycomb) and gives some details of living styles in Mississippi (where Charles Baker Harris, also known as Dill, is from). One of the themes in To Kill a Mockingbird is that of prejudice. It is portrayed in the story in many manners, being the color of skin, economy wise, and even that of gender. Females in Maycomb, Alabama are seen as fragile pieces. Southern womanhood is a stereotype. A stereotype to which many of the woman from the southern states fit: “a delicate and refined belle” . In chapter 15 Atticus and his sister Alexandra have a discussion on “Southern womanhood” and “polite fiction”: “I walked home with Dill and returned in time to overhear Atticus saying to Aunty, “… in favor of Southern womanhood as much as anybody, but not for preserving polite fiction at the expense of human life,” a pronouncement that made me ......
