A hero is a person or thing that shows a non-fading ability to stand up in the face of danger and adversity and persevere and come out strong on the other side. A hero is someone with an undefeatable drive to succeed and an uncanny ability to lead and direct others in times of danger; a hero must hold together and protect his community. Members of the community must look up to him for leadership. To me Bilbo is most definitely a hero, he overcomes obstacles and changes his world and during the last parts of the novel he is the leader of his group of people and his friends. Everyone that is with him looks to him for guidance, he can definitely be seen as a hero and that is exactly what Bilbo is.
It is obvious throughout the novel that Bilbo is undergoing continual growth as both a character and as far as maturing into a hero and a leader.
