In the 1850's, the United States was basically divided among the North and South due to the varied ways which the economies had developed over the years. The North was surrounded by harbors, and plentiful factories had developed; thus the economy there was more commerce based. The Southern economy had developed into a plantation system due to the vast amounts of land. This economy was centered around farming items such as tobacco, cotton, and sugar; and thus there was a great need for slavery to get the work done. In the 1850's however, many Americans were opening their eyes to a new division-the West. People saw the West as opportunity; there was a new place with cheap land, a way to start their lives over. In addition, the West also provided a stronger link to the North because of transportation systems. However, in this new area, one issue was to remain undecided and disputed, and that was the issue of slavery.
