All classical civilizations practiced the utilization of slaves including Greece, Rome, and India. All three countries have different viewpoints on slavery and the treatment of slaves. Varying factors such as race and ethnicity effected the way slavery is handled by the citizens of each country. Several documents such as The Republic, Textbook, and The Law of Manu are used to explain the significance of slavery in this classical time period.
Greeces view on slavery and the treatment of salves can best be by two documents: The Republic and Economics. In Platos Republic he describes the effects of slavery within their own race would corrupt the Greek society. He first asks us is it right that Greek states should sell Greeks into slavery. Here Plato is asking why would someone would imprison there own people. Greeks should not be exploiting their own people, but trying to prevent opposing nations from imprisoning their fellow race and forcing them to become slaves.
