Coleridge the Romanticist
William Wordsworth once stated that poetry comes from the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings (Romanticism 1). This statement is true to the work of Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his poem, Kubla Khan. During Coleridges lifetime, the Romantic Movement began to arise in England. This was an artistic and literary movement that inspired artists and writers to use their imagination to create original ideas. Throughout Kubla Khan, Coleridge uses imagery, allusion, and point of view to display a sense of Romanticism.
Romanticists believed that through observing the world around us we can somewhat create our own world. Kubla Khan is encumbered with imagery and descriptive language. However, many critics say Coleridge was inspired by an opium induced dream (Gray 1). The imagery throughout the poem describes a type of paradise, or a pleasure-dome, known as Xanadu (Coleridge 951).
