The Feminine Touch The male mystique has been depicted throughout history as the dominating sex in all aspects from fighting to intellectuality. Mimicking these cultural standards, in literature qualities portraying masculinity are typically associated with male characters while the females are portrayed as passive and inferior. William Shakespeare used this image to his advantage and traversed this stereotypical image to give his female characters depth and purpose. Across three of Shakespeare’s plays, Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth, the female characters are driving forces for plot development. There is a repetitive structure that Shakespeare uses in the development of his female characters. The good and faithful women are married or associated with a male character, while the whores and “evil” women are those who stand on their own and have no association with a male character in the play.
