Everafter - an interpretation of the classic Cinderella story Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The film Everafter is a re-interpretation of the classic Cinderella fairytale; however it challenges this with gender, multi dimensional characters, realism and a complex plot giving emphasis on social justice issues.
The main way Everafter challenges the Cinderella fairytale is through the female heroine, Danielle Cinderella. Conventional gender stereotypes are broken down, and Danielle is a strong female heroine.
In the original fairytale, the stepsisters are pictured as ugly, though in Everafter they are attractive young women whose beauty is only skin deep. This breaks down the stereotypes of Cinderella story, that the exterior of a person matches them on the inside. Another stereotype is that the female character is a quiet character, always in some kind of trouble and needs to be saved by a strong, handsome (and almost silent) prince. Everafter challenges this stereotype - Danielle isnt waiting around for the prince to save her; in fact, she comes to his aid, giving him guidance, and even saving his life, rescuing him from a group of pirates.
