Hispanic Americans are a diverse and vibrant group of people with roots in several Latin American countries. The terms "Hispanic" and "Latino" are often used synonymously in the United States, in the general sense however, Hispanic refers specifically to Spain and other countries of the Americas that speak Spanish. At a population of over 42.7 million, Hispanics are the largest minority in the United States. Their population constitutes 14% of the total population of United States. Added to this, it is estimated that there are 2-3 million Hispanic immigrants currently living illegally in the United States. Mexican Americans Of all the subgroups of Hispanic Americans, Mexican Americans are the largest. There are over 26.8 million people in the United States of Mexican ancestry.
