Coach Tigues voice seared into my head as I started down the last two hundred meters. My heart was on the verge of exploding, my legs on the brink of collapse. One hundred meters left. The soles of my feet throbbed in agony from contact with the grassy track, my lungs begging me to give in to exhaustion and overexertion. Five meters. I urged myself onwards towards the final threshold, picturing myself as a cheetah hunting a gazelle: completely focused on its goal.
My dad gave me a round of high-fives after I finished the race that day, the last of my freshman year, crossing the finish line as number one seventy-five with a time of twenty minutes and fifteen seconds. As I downed my water, I felt a wave of disappointment hit me. The look of discontent evident on my face, my dad gave me an inquiring look, eyebrow raised. I didnt even break twenty, I said sulkily. He smiled, patted me on the shoulder, and then bent down to meet me eye-to-eye from where I was sitting on the water cooler and proceeded to give me a heart-to-heart talk.
