Censorship Censorship in the arts has increased in recent years, meaning things are getting censored that do not necessarily need to be. Movies, art, music, television, and literature are getting unjustly censored. This is un-American. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states, Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech or of the press (Kelly, 1998, p. 11). Yet more books, movies, and c.d.s keep coming off the shelves and out of the schools. How much is too much? Censorship, in effect, is letting someone else tell the public what is right or wrong. This imposing of beliefs is fascism and that is not what this country was built on. According to Websters Dictionary, censorship is the prevention of disturbing or painful thoughts or feelings from reaching consciousness except in a disguised form. So often, many of the things being bleeped, removed and covered up are harming no one, yet the extremists ruin it for everyone.
