HOW DOES GUY DE MAUPASSANT CREATE A GROWING FEELING OF MENACE IN THE SHORT STORY “A VENDETTA” The setting is an important part in making the story menacing, when Maupassant builds up the vision in your mind what this story is all about. A small village on the edge of a cliff soon get a nasty shock that it is about a heartless murder followed shortly by another. When Guy de Maupassant describes the town as being an isolated place next to a raging ocean 'clinging to this peak' makes it sound as if it could be destroyed any second, tension is built at the start of the story with the first murder and the vendetta being sworn. The way he describes the town as 'like the nests of wild birds' meaning that it isn't organised, the buildings have just been thrown up where ever there was space. And maybe bad living conditions. ‘overlooking this terrible passage’ shows that it is a dangerous passage where anything can happen, 'where vessels rarely venture' adds to the feeling of danger. When Maupassant says ‘wind which blows uninterruptedly' this means that......
