The Importance of Playing the Role of a Woman for Song Liling David Henry Jwang’s play M. Butterfly gives us a wonderful insight of life in China during the 1960’s and a glimpse of how the Orientals view Westerner’s imperial domination in the East. The influence of the opera Madame Butterfly is shown throughout the play and gives an ironical twist to the theme of the play – this time it is an Oriental man disguised as a woman, Song Liling, that takes advantage of a weak Western man, Rene Gallimard. The title of the play M. Butterfly already gives us a clue as to the connection with the opera, but one is intrigued by the M. Is it for Madame or what does it mean? It is till the end of the play that we come to understand what the M. really signifies. Song Liling, the antagonist, plays a fascinating creature, somewhere between male and female. Song could not have come to play the role he played without a Gallimard, and Gallimard could not have done what he did without a Song coming into his life.
