James Longstreet: An Untarnished Legacy There is no doubt that James Longstreet had a significant influence on the strategy and tactics that emerged during the Civil War, but after the war, many regarded Longstreet’s strategies and tactics as the reason why the war was lost, thus creating a scapegoat for Lee’s and the South’s defeat. In contrast to these beliefs, Longstreet had an enlightened grasp of the need for changes to strategy to accommodate the weaponry that was being developed around the middle of the nineteenth century. Longstreet’s ideas on strategy were quite innovative for his time. His combining of the strategic offensive with the tactical defensive, as evidenced at the battle of Fredericksburg, provides an excellent example of how he implemented effective tactics and strategies to win battles. To be considered a tarnished leader and scapegoat in the South would evidently be unjust as he deserves his proper place in American history.
