How far do you agree that the economic consequences of railway development in the years 1830-1914 were more significant and substantial than the social consequences? The arrival of the railways during the 1830s coincided with the on going industrialisation of Britain’s economy so by the 1840’s Britain was known as the ‘workshop of the world’ producing over 30% of the world’s global industrial output by 1870. The fact that Britain was the first nation to have an industrial revolution meant that it was ahead of all its rivals in terms of trade and exports. However there is great debate amongst historians about the definition of the term industrial revolution. The first defines the term industrial revolution as a ‘process utterly changes certain sectors of the economy in a relatively short period of time’ contemporary significance has placed great emphasis on this definition whereby the railways impact was deemed to be great both socially and economically.
