Musicology – essay on the Piano The musical instrument, the piano can be described as “an instrument of dreams” . From as early as the 19th century the piano has undergone dramatic development to become what is today. The piano is found around the entire world and is used in many different genres; these include classical, jazz and popular music. There are many techniques pianists use to express their music which include clusters, glissandos and pedaling. These techniques make the way pianists play more expressive. As a result of analyzing the pieces Rondo in A major by Beethoven (structure) Mazurka in A minor by Chopin (Pitch) and Prelude II by Christopher Norton (dynamics and expressive techniques), we can come to understand the differences in the pieces that were written for the piano. The piano is the most popular instrument in this day and age. When the pianist hits a key the sound is produced by a hammer hitting steel strings that instantly rebound which allow the strings to keep vibrating for as long as the key is held down.
