Origins of the Vietnam War Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In most Southeast Asia the anti-colonial movements wanted to achieve independence either through peaceful negotiation or through fighting for it. Vietnam was special in that way; Franc's policies were firm and uncompromising towards the national movements, which eventually brought Communist and non-Communist patriots together in order to achieve independence. (Hill & Wang, 37) The French administration came to an agreement with the Japanese (the Japanese were the ones occupying the colony of Southeast Asia during World War 1) that they would stay in charge administratively in Vietnam, under close supervision of Japan. Japan than could rely on the French to do their dirty work in Vietnam and did not need to give the leading nationalists any kind of benefits to keep them from undermining the occupation as they did in the rest of their Southeast colonies. They than did just the opposite, they were very strict in their behavior towards nationalist activity, which made them operate underground.
