Literature comes to us from many different times, places, and authors, and its main purpose is to tell a story. The author must be able to convey his story to the reader in a clear and concise way in order to get his point across. The setting and characters play a major point in this process regardless of whether the story comes from ancient times or was written yesterday. If the characters and setting are not common to the reader, the story itself is in jeopardy of being misunderstood. It may be taken the wrong way, not as the author intended. Samuel Johnson once said Nothing can please many, and please long, but just representations of general nature. Johnson meant literary work must have a setting and characters common to the reader in order for the reader to relate to the story.
