In 1630, Puritans migrated from a country where nobles and gentry owned 75 percent of the arable land and farmed it by using servants, leasing holding tenants, and wage laborers. In New England, Puritans created a yeoman society composed of independent farm families who owned their lands as freeholders. The Chesapeake area included Anglicans, Quakers, Swedish and German Lutherans, Scots-Irish Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics. Unlike the New England Colonies, the Chesapeake had many cultural identities. Religion shaped the development of colonial society by marriage, children, and farming. In the New England Society, most women married in their early twenties, by their forties, many had already given birth to six or seven children. Mothers had less time for religious activities because her babies took up a large portion of her time and attention. However, there were more women than men who became full members of the Puritan congregations of New England. This was because women joined so their children may be baptized in the church and because they feared the dangers ......
