Abstract: Photosynthesis is a process that gives green plants the ability to produce their own food from inorganic compounds. This process has not only completely changed our atmosphere but it also produces the food supply for our biosphere. The aim of the controlled experiment is to confirm the requirements of the photosynthetic process, by creating a control and two different environmental conditions, which test if photosynthesis can occur without either one of its main reactants (carbon) or its energy source (sunlight). This was achieved by exposing disks, 0.5cm in diameter, of fresh spinach that had undergone a vacuum process, to the three conditions for 20 minutes, by which time photosynthesis can be observed as occurring if any disks float. As thirty six percent of the disks floated in the controlled environment it indicated that some form of photosynthesis had occurred and as no disks floated in the two test environments, it showed no signs of photosynthesis.
