Pride and Prejudice - reality inside the fiction Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Pride and prejudice was first published in the early 19th century. With the impact of the industrial revolution, the 1800s was a time of change in England. Even though pride and prejudice is a novel, we are able to see the imprint of the reality almost everywhere. However, Jane Austen was not a politico, and pride and prejudice is not a work to critique the society. The “real world” issues can only be discovered in the margins. The number one issue for the early 19th century was the impact of the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution makes it possible for families without relations with royalty to own properties close, if not the same, to the royal families. The creation of the middle class blurred the social class division. In Pride and prejudice, Mr. Bingley’s family benefited from doing business in the northern England, and they do not own a permanent estate. “Mr. Bingley inherited property to the amount of nearly an hundred thousand pounds from his father, who had intended to purchase an estate, but did not live to do it” (p.12).
