Bilateral Connections Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Centuries ago, there were many conflicts fought in Central Asia for the purpose of controlling the Silk Road. Persians, Turks, Chinese, Arabs, and Mongols had all fought to be the superior power in the region and for control over the caravan routes. However, even though the Silk Road became obsolete centuries ago and silk is no longer such a valuable commodity, this region is still the focal point of intense international struggles for dominance and control. Today, fossil fuels are the new precious commodity and the caravans have been replaced with oil and gas pipelines. One of these countries trying to gain influence in this region is China, which desperately needs oil and gas to fuel its growing industrial economy. Yet, Central Asians have different perspectives on developing closer ties with China. While it may be true that China can offer great economic opportunities to these newly independent republics, many in Central Asia mistrust the Chinese due past historical conflicts and vast cultural and religious differences.
