For thousands of years diverse ethnic groups have moved through, settled in, or conquered the lands of the ancient Silk Road. However, it was not until the Russians, and their successors the Soviets, took control over Central Asia that countries were finally created there. Before that time, identity and loyalty belonged only to families, clans, tribes, or towns and cities. The idea of drawing borders and creating nation-states around a single ethnic group, or nationalism, is a Western idea; it was a foreign concept to the people living in Central Asia at that time. Today these artificially created states are free of the Soviet controls and ideology, yet they are still using the country arrangement created by the Russian invaders. Moreover, these newly independent states are carrying these principles of nation-states even further than the Russians. The occupiers drew illogical borders in order to create countries that would be ethnically mixed and therefore weaker and easier to control.
