Australian Social and Political Life to 1914 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

At the beginning of the 20th Century, Australia became a nation. As the colonies had grown since European settlement in 1788, there had proved a need for individual governments. By 1901, Australia was made up of six colonies, each with its own government. Following much debate, mostly during the 1880s and 1890s, the colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia on 1st January 1901. The first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton. The new nation developed a Constitution through referendums held in 1898, 1899 and 1900, but it had to be approved by the British Parliament before being finally put in place. The Australian Constitution was modelled partly on the United States of America's Constitution, including similar names for the two federal houses (House of Representatives and Senate), the division of powers between the Commonwealth Government and the States and the establishment of a court to interpret the Constitution.
