One of the most pivotal and disputed periods in American history, the Civil War was simply a fight against slavery. Being an important aspect leading to the war, there were several other causes leading to a fight between the North and the South. Finally resulting in secession after Abraham Lincolns election in 1864. Economic and social differences between territories, the state versus federal rights, the fight between slave and non slave proponents; were all great examples of the inevitability of the war. The northern economy was based more on industry than agriculture. In fact, the northern industries were purchasing raw cotton and turning it into finished goods. With the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in 1793, cotton became very profitable in the south. However, the increase in the number of plantations willing to move from other crops to cotton meant the greater need for a large amount of cheap labor, i.e. slaves.
