Infectious Diseases among Inmate Populations Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Today, well over two million persons are imprisoned in American and, we as a country, have the highest percentage rate than any other country (Jacobi, 2005). One of the major issues, past and present, is managing infectious diseases among the inmate population. The health of inmates has not always been a priority in the eyes of the corrections system or the public. Now, there is a growing concern, not only for the wellness of the inmate, but also for the public upon the inmates release. Along with my assessment of the past history and present circumstances, I will offer my recommendations of how this growing health concern should or could be addressed.
Most prisoners we incarcerate are poor, uneducated, of color, and are sick. They usually receive sub-standard health care and have for many years. The prison populations have increased more than four times from 1980 to 2003, from about 500,000 in 1980 to over 2,000,000 in 2003. Most of the inmate population consisted of black or Hispanic persons.
