The night is cold, but the buzz of excitement warms the air. Barry Bonds, outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, steps up to the plate. Chan Ho Park, pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, knows what is at stake. The pitcher sets, and releases the baseball. The crowd holds its breath as the umpire calls a ball. Park takes a deep breath. Bonds stares him down and settles in, ready to make history. Park sends the ball toward the batter again; then, as if a bolt of lightning had hit it, the ball is in the air heading for right-center. It has the height and the distance, and its gone. The crowd erupts as Barry rounds the bases; number 71 is the number that flashes on the giant screen. And just like that, Barry Bonds has broken the record for homeruns hit in a season.
