Rudolph and Hermie: Why Am I Such A Misfit? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer many important issues that are still talked about today are addressed in underlying themes. It focuses around two protagonists who act as metaphors for critical issues in our world today. Rudolph, who has a red light for a nose, portrays society’s unwillingness to accept the differences of another human; and Hermie, is an elf who desires to be a dentist in a place where the social norm is to make toys, much like a gay man who desires the love of another man in a society where homosexuality is considered a sin. The story starts out at the North Pole where a baby reindeer is born. At birth his parents can tell that he is different, his nose is bright red and lights up like a light bulb. His mother accepts him (as most women would per their preconceived gender-roles), but his father greets this new development with resentment and embarrassment. When Santa sees this he also states that Rudolph won’t ever be on the sleigh team with a nose like that. Comet, Rudolph’s father is a member of Santa’s team that pulls the sleigh on Christmas Eve.
